A landscape gardener works on new construction, development and maintenance in gardens. The job also involves providing advice on garden plants and horticulture. Landscape gardening is a certified trade.

As a landscape gardener, you could run your own business, work for a self-employed master of landscape gardening or for municipalities, companies and institutions.

Main tasks

• care planning for green areas
• landscaping for the development of gardens
• laying slabs and planting trees
• stacking with natural stone and/or concrete units
• pruning trees and shrubs
• weeding, mowing and mossing
• spraying and fertilizing
• advice on gardening and selection of garden plants

Competence requirements

A landscape gardener needs to have expertise in soil and surface materials in ornamental horticulture, both organic and inorganic. It is important to know the treatment of the main species of garden plants for Icelandic conditions, the most common pests in horticulture and mitigation measures against them.

The work involves the use of various tools and gardening equipment, but also more specialized equipment such as soil compactors, slab saws and equipment for spraying against insects and weeds, as well as machinery.

Study

Landscape gardening is a three-year study at the secondary level, taught at the Agricultural University of Iceland at Reykir in Ölfus.

Validation of prior learning has taken place and/or may be available.
