Landscape gardening

Landscape gardening is a work-related study program at the secondary school level. The study program entails increasing skills and knowledge regarding new construction, maintenance and restoration of plots. Basic subjects in landscape gardening include botany, soil science, and plant knowledge of trees, shrubs and garden flowers as well as business and marketing. The course also covers special subjects such as landscape garden architecture, landscape garden drawing, and landscape care.

Landscape gardening is a certified trade. The average study period is three years, including vocational training. 

It is possible to have skills acquired in the labour market evaluated.

Study

Landscape gardening is a study program at the secondary school level which will from autumn 2022 onwards be offered by Fjölbrautaskóli Suðurlands, with teaching remaining on the premises of the University of Agriculture at Reykir in Ölfus. 

Requirements

It is preferable that the applicant has completed a 12-week trial period in apprenticeship with a landscape gardening master as part of their vocational education before the theoretical studies commence, but this is assessed on a case-by-case basis. Applicants must also have completed two to four semesters of secondary school, including certain credits in a certain number of subjects. Job experience may be assessed as part of the studies, which is examined on a case-by-case basis.

The program has been credit-worthy at the Student Education Fund (Menntasjóður námsmanna). Trade unions often provide scholarships for study. Get more information from your union.

Curriculum

Landscape gardening studies are divided into basic horticulture, specialized landscape gardening disciplines and vocational training. Vocational training takes place at a vocational education location under the supervision of a master chosen by the student and approved before the start of the study program.

After graduation

After completing studies and vocational training, it is possible to take a journeyman’s examination that entitles you to work in the field as well as admission to studies for a master craftsman’s exam. It is also possible to complete additional studies for a matriculation examination. Advanced landscape gardening study programs, such as a diploma or a BS degree, are available in various schools in the Nordic countries.
