Construction architect

Construction architects work on the design of buildings and other structures, plan or manage construction projects as well as supervising and providing professional advice.

As a construction architect, you work with architects, engineers, technicians, craftsmen and other staff in the construction industry. Construction architects work in various fields; as designers, project managers or quality managers in architectural and engineering firms, in design studios, in insurance companies or in construction companies.

Main tasks

• estimating the cost of repairs and maintenance
• preparing tender documents and offers
• negotiations with contractors and selection of materials
• ensuring load-bearing capacity and plumbing fulfills requirements for fire safety, sound insulation etc.
• renovation and improvements of old buildings

Competence requirements

A construction architect must be meticulous and have good organizational skills. The work entails using various design and calculation programs as well as tools to assess the condition of buildings. An interest in architecture and good interpersonal skills is also an advantage.

Study

A BSc study program in construction architecture is a three- to four-year study at Reykjavík University, partly taught in distance learning.
