An aquaculturist acquires hatchery fish, breeds it under ready conditions in fish farms, slaughters it and sells it to stores and companies.
In your work as an aquaculturist, you collaborate with others related to the industry, such as veterinarians, fish pathologists, feed producers, retailers and laboratory staff.

– cleaning and adjusting the temperature, oxygen, salinity and flow rate in each vessel

An aquaculturist needs to have extensive knowledge in the fields of aquaculture, aquatic biology and fish biology. It is esirable to be able to work both independently and with others. In aquaculture, various technologies and tools are used that it is good to have knowledge of, such as a feed shovel, automatic feeder, brailer, fish pump, forklift and various measuring devices.
Aquaculture is a one-year study at Hólar University and ends with a diploma. The study is both theoretical and practical, and a formal internship is a total of 12 weeks.
