Interior designers work on creative projects related to housing utilization and interior quality. The job is threefold; conceptual work and preliminary drafts, drawings and project descriptions, and finally supervision and evaluation of the project at hand. Interior designer is a certified professional title.
As an interior designer, you could do work on the design of private homes, shops, hotels, restaurants, schools, hospitals or factories.

Main tasks

• providing services and advice related to interior design
• performing assessments with regard to possible planning, infrastructure and interiors
• making work plans and bids
• scrutinizing supply in the construction and furniture market

Competence requirements

Interior designers need to be able to consider the artistic and aesthetic aspects of the design, as well as efficiency and technical aspects. It is important to be proficient as drawing as well as having a sense of colour, style and proportions. Attributes such as organizational skills and being able to express one’s ideas well are beneficial in the job of an interior designer.

Study

Interior design usually involves about five years of study at the university level for certification in the field. The Iceland Academy of the Arts offers a three-year BA program in design and architecture, in addition to which there are art programs at several secondary schools, e.g. the School of Design and Innovation at the Technical College.
