Exterminator

Exterminators use different methods to eliminate pests such as wasps, rats, mice and silverfish. They work in a variety of locations, such as gardens, buildings and sewers, using different materials, gases and traps.

Many exterminators work independently but many also work in the public or private sector.

Main tasks

• identifying pest problems and the damage done
• evaluating which sort of treatment is appropriate in each case
• distributing toxins in appropriate places
• installing warning signs and locking buildings to ensure safety
• cleaning work area after work
• preventing recurrent pest problems

Competence requirements

An exterminator needs to have a sense of service and the ability to solve problems. It is important to know the laws and regulations on the safe use of pesticides. Interest in animals and nature is also a considerable advantage. It is necessary to have all the required permits up to date.

Study

A special course at the Agricultural University of Iceland Continuing Education must be completed in order to apply for a permit for pest control. At the end of the course, an application for an operating license is submitted to the Environment Agency.
