Mechanics is a work-related study program at the secondary school level. The course consists of increasing knowledge and skills on the structure, process and maintenance of machines, cooling systems and air controls. It is possible to have skills acquired in the labour market evaluated.
Mechanics is a certified trade. The average study period is three years, in addition to vocational training, during which the progress of the workplace studies is recorded in an electronic logbook.
Study programs in mechanics have been taught at Borgarholtsskóli, Fjölbrautaskóli Norðurlands vestra, Fjölbrautaskóli Suðurlands, Fjölbrautaskóli Vesturlands, Framhaldsskólinn í Vestmannaeyjum, Tækniskólinn, Verkmenntaskólinn á Akureyri, and Verkmenntaskóli Austurlands. Undergraduate studies in the metal and mechanical engineering disciplines have also been taught at Fjölbrautaskólinn á Suðurnesjum and Menntaskólinn á Ísafirði.

The program has been credit-worthy for subsistence and other loans at the Student Education Fund (Menntasjóður námsmanna). Trade unions often provide scholarships for study. Get more information from your union.
The mechanics study program is divided into general theoretical subjects, specialties and vocational training. Check whether the study program or part of it can be taught in distance learning.
Fjölbrautaskóli Vesturlands has offered a mechanics studies study program alongside work, but the requirement is that the applicant has reached the age of 23 and has some work experience that is evaluated to shorten the program.
After completing studies and vocational training, it is possible to take a journeyman’s examination that entitles you to work in the field as well as giving admission to studies for a master craftsman’s exam. It is also possible to complete additional studies for a matriculation examination.
