Mechanics install, repair, maintain, replace and service all kinds of mechanical and technical equipment in ships, processing plants, machines, factories and energy utilities. Mechanics therefore work wherever machinery is used, including consulting and sales of such equipment. Mechanics is a certified trade.
A mechanic must be able to assess the condition of machines and damaged machine parts, repair them, renew them and test them. Knowledge of welding and cooling systems is important, as well as being able to read drawings and being familiar with the safety measures at work, for example with regard to handling high pressure and electricity. The work involves the use of various hand tools, measuring equipment and metalworking machines such as drilling, cutting and milling machines.
Mechanics is taught at Borgarholtsskóli, Fjölbrautaskóli Vesturlands, Fjölbrautaskóli Norðurlands vestra, Fjölbrautaskóli Suðurlands, Tækniskólinn, Verkmenntaskóli Austurlands og Verkmenntaskólinn á Akureyri in addition to which basic studies in metal work can be found elsewhere. The average period of study for mechanics is four years: three years in school and 60 weeks of internship. Validation of prior learning has taken place and/or may be available.
