Goldsmiths and silversmiths work in workshops and/or shops designing, developing and making jewelery. They also work with precious stones, artifacts and practical objects made of gold and silver, and develop ideas from start to a finished product. Goldsmiths and silversmiths provide various types of consultation and customer service, as well as sales and marketing. Goldsmithing and silversmithing is a certified trade.

Goldsmiths and silversmiths also work with other metals, such as nickel, copper, brass, platinum and titanium. The metal is processed into molds by various methods and ornaments are burned into the piece, if applicable. The surface is finished by grinding and sanding, hammering or digging into a pattern.

Main tasks

• pre-processing gold and silver for molding
• repairing and cleaning jewelery such as rings, bracelets and necklaces
• engraving text, decorating and embedding gems in metal
• coating metal with different methods
• casting jewelery and making molds for more sophisticated pieces

Competence requirements

As a goldsmith/silversmith, you need to be able to work independently as well as having extensive knowledge of metals and stones related to jewelery and goldsmithing/silversmithing. It is advantageous to know the traditions in Icelandic jewelery making and be able to fashion simple pieces of the sort. Goldsmithing/silversmithing involves the use of various tools and equipment, with computer technology also used in development, design and production.

Study

Goldsmithing and silversmithing is taught at the Technical College. The average duration of study is four years.
