Philosopher

Philosophers engage with fundamental questions about life and existence. Those who title themselves philosophers often work at universities or research institutes, but many philosophically educated people also work in teaching in primary and secondary schools, in journalism, or in various types of writing jobs. Much of philosophers’ work is also related to fields such as economics, mathematics, literature, law, and history.

Competence requirements

Wherever philosophy is practiced, critical thinking and disciplined work methods are very important qualities in both study and work. Philosophers need to be able to deal with difficult questions, such as ethical issues of right and wrong, and be able to see more than one side of each issue. It is also beneficial to be interested in debate and a variety of academic theories.

Study

A BA degree in philosphy is on offer at the University of Iceland, where it is also possible to pursue postgraduate studies.

Bifröst University also offers a so-called HHS program, which combines philosophy, economics and political science for a BA degree.
