Auto mechanics work on repair, maintenance and improvements to cars and vehicles. They often specialize in certain types of cars or engine parts. Auto mechanics often work on the drive mechanism of the car; the gearbox, engine, brakes, steering wheel, or electrical equipment. Auto mechanics is a certified trade.
Most auto mechanics work in car repair shops but also in inspections at companies and inspection stations and in stores that sell vehicles or spare parts.

As an auto mechanic, you need to be able to work independently and methodically on the assessment and repair of the most common vehicle malfunctions. It is important to know traffic laws and regulations and be able to advise customers based on their needs and wishes, such as regarding costs and billing hours. The work of an auto mechanics involves wide use of specialized computer-controlled devices.
Auto mechanics is taught at Borgarholtsskóli and Verkmenntaskólinn á Akureyri. In addition, various schools offer two-semester departments in metalworking and mechanical engineering. Studying to become an auto mechanic takes about three and a half years.
