School assistance studies

Skill level: 2

School assistance studies are work-related and at the secondary school level. The study program entails preparing people for jobs in primary schools in monitoring halls, supervision of children in outdoor activities and during mealtimes, cleaning, general monitoring duties and monitoring school premises. Validation of prior learning has taken place in the discipline where skills from the labour market are assessed.

The average duration of study is one year, including six weeks of vocational training.

Study

Pedagogy and service study programs have been offered at Verkmenntaskóli Austurlands and Borgarholtsskóli. Fjarmenntaskólinn also offers distance learning.

A school assistance gateway may be available at the schools where the school assistance study program is taught, as well as at educational and lifelong learning centers.

Requirements

Applicants must have completed compulsory education in accordance with the National Curriculum Guide for Compulsory Schools. However, there may be exceptions at individual schools. There is also a study program at the school assistance gateway, intended to make it easier for unskilled people with work experience to gain professional qualifications. The prerequisites are that the applicant is at least 22 years of age, has at least three years of work experience and has completed work-related courses.

Check whether the study program is credit-worthy at the Student Education Fund. Trade unions often provide scholarships for study. Get more information from your union.

Curriculum

The program is divided into general theoretical studies, specialized school assistance study path courses and workplace learning.

The school assistance gateway is intended to shorten the school assistance studies, and to this end, only specialized courses are covered.

After graduation

Upon graduation, you can take a job as a school assistant at a primary school.
