Guiding is a specialized vocational training program at university level. The program includes, among other things, preparing students for general guiding duties with tourists. The nature, history and defining features of Iceland are explored, together with special coverage of a certain type of guiding. The duration of study is one year.
Guiding has been taught at the Guiding School at Menntaskólinn í Kópavogi, the Department of Continuing Education at the University of Iceland, and the Lifelong Learning Center at the University of Akureyri.
Also, a different kind of course in guidance has been offered at Keilir, a center for science, studies and business. A study path in mountaineering has also been available at Fjarmenntaskólinn.
Admission requirements are a matriculation examination or comparable studies as well as being at least 21 years old and having a good command of Icelandic and one foreign language. To guide foreign tourists, applicants take an oral entrance exam in a language of their choice.
The program is credit-worthy for subsistence and tuition fees at the Student Education Fund (Menntasjóður námsmanna). Trade unions often provide scholarships for study. Get more information from your union.
The study program is divided into core subjects, specialist subjects and electives, along with field trips. The program lasts two or three semesters, depending on where it is taught.
A final exam in guiding course at the Guiding School of Menntaskólinn í Kópavogi, the Department of Continuing Education of the University of Iceland and the Lifelong Learning Center of the University of Akureyri grant professional membership in the Iceland Tourist Guide Association.
