Electricians work in the installation, repair and inspection of electrical equipment. Their work takes place in workshops, in new buildings, in ships and vehicles, in energy companies, industrial companies and industrial plants. An electrician is well acquainted with various electrical materials and with all kinds of electrical appliances, electrical machines, industrial computer controls, control equipment and programmable electrical systems. Electrician is a legally protected job title.

As an electrician, you could, for example, work in repair services in workshops, doing wiring in new buildings, work with electrical systems in industrial companies or in consulting and services in electronics stores.

Main tasks

• installing, overseeing and maintenance of wiring and electrical equipment
• maintenance of electrical and electronic equipment as well as new wiring and electrical systems of vehicles
• troubleshooting of electrical equipment and power lines
• installing and connecting electrical equipment in electrical panels and wiring to electrical appliances
• installing the most common antenna, call, signal and alarm systems
• installing the most common antenna, call, signal and alarm systems of applications, installing wiring systems and instructing regarding their use

Competence requirements

An electrician needs to be well acquainted with the equipment of electrical appliances, electrical machines and programmable wiring systems and be able to handle their installation and maintenance. It is good to have a basic knowledge of the hardware and software of computer systems, know lighting technology and be able to perform troubleshooting and repairs on electrical equipment.

As an electrician, it is important to know safety aspects in the electrical industry, such as emergency switches, emergency stops and contact hazards, and to take appropriate precautions. Electricians use various measuring instruments at work as well as general and specialized hand and electrical tools.

Study

Electrical engineering is taught at TækniskólinnFjölbrautaskólinn í BreiðholtiFjölbrautaskóli SuðurnesjaFjölbrautaskóli SuðurlandsFjölbrautaskóli VesturlandsFjölbrautaskóli Norðurlands vestraVerkmenntaskólinn á Akureyri og Verkmenntaskóli Austurlands.

The average duration of study is four years, including 24 or 48 weeks of internship. Undergraduate studies in electronics are a two-year program, offered at the aforementioned schools as well as Framhaldsskólinn í Vestmannaeyjum and Menntaskólinn á Ísafirði.
