Costume makers create and implement costumes according to the drawings and information of a costume designer. The job involves tailoring, sewing and working with a variety of materials, colours and textures.


For example, in costume making, you could work in a larger theater, in a TV studio, or as a filmmaking contractor.

Main tasks

– implementing costumes according to the drawings of a costume designer
– suggesting costume materials and accessories such as buttons and zippers
– colouring costume materials, creating patterns and textures
– examining designs from a specific period in order to have costumes as realistic as possible
– trying costumes on and adjusting them if necessary, for example narrowing or widening
– ironing and making costumes ready for a show
– fixing costumes that are damaged during use

Competence requirements

Working in costume making, it is desirable to have learned tailoring, dressmaking or costume making, in addition to which interest and knowledge of design, colour theory, costume history and even shoemaking can be useful. It is important to have the skill to change costumes according to periods, age and texture as well as being able to work with precision and patience. Costume makers work with a variety of tools for tailoring and sewing.

Study

Costume making is not taught specifically in Iceland, but related subjects such as design and innovation, clothing technology, dressmaking and tailoring are taught at the Technical College, as well as the clothing and textile elective study paths of art study options of several secondary schools.
