Building studies

Skill level: 3

Building studies are a work-related study program at the secondary school level. The study program entails, among other things, that students gain understanding, knowledge and skills to carry out building work in the construction and civil engineering industries; workshop and interior work, outdoors and indoors work as well as repair and alteration work. It is possible to have skills acquired in the labour market evaluated.

Building is a certified trade. The average study period is four years, including vocational training, during which the progress of the workplace studies is recorded in an electronic logbook.

Requirements

Applicants must have completed compulsory education in accordance with the National Curriculum Guide for Compulsory Schools, see more on the schools’ websites.

The building study program has been credit-worthy at the Student Education Fund (Menntasjóður námsmanna). Trade unions also often provide scholarships for study. Get more information from your union.

Curriculum

The building study program is divided into general theoretical subjects, specialties and vocational training. Check whether the study program or part of it can be taught in distance learning.

The first semester covers joint basic studies in construction engineering and civil engineering. The student makes a study agreement with a master in the subject where the internship takes place.

Fjölbrautaskóli Vesturlands has offered a building studies study program alongside work, but the requirement is that the applicant has reached the age of 23 and has some work experience.

After graduation

After completing studies and vocational training, it is possible to take a journeyman’s examination that entitles you to work in the field as well as admission to studies for a master craftsman’s exam or construction technology. It is also possible to complete additional studies for a matriculation examination.
