Tinsmithing is a work-related study program at the secondary school level. The studies involve increasing knowledge and skills in the main materials used in tinsmithing, construction and maintenance of thin metal. Students also learn environmental and safety rules, to read drawings, and become familiar with systems and computer programs used in tinsmithing. It is possible to have skills acquired in the labour market evaluated.


Tinsmithing is a certified trade. The average duration of study is about three years in addition to 52 weeks of internship.

Study

A study program in tinsmithing has been taught at Borgarholtsskóli. Undergraduate studies in the metal and mechanical engineering disciplines have also been taught at Fjölbrautaskólinn á Suðurnesjum, Fjölbrautarskóli Norðurlands Vestra, Fjölbrautarskóli Suðurlands, Fjölbrautarskóli Vesturlands, Framhaldsskólinn í Vestmannaeyjum, Menntaskólinn á Ísafirði, Tækniskólinn, Verkmenntaskóli Austurlands og Verkmenntaskólinn á Akureyri.

Requirements

Applicants must have completed compulsory education in accordance with the National Curriculum Guide for Compulsory Schools, see more on the school’s website.

The program has been credit-worthy at the Student Education Fund (Menntasjóður námsmanna). Trade unions often provide scholarships for study. Get more information from your union.

Curriculum

Tinsmithing is divided into general theoretical subjects, specialties and vocational training. Check whether the study program or part of it can be taught in distance learning.

  • The first two years are spent in a joint undergraduate course in metallurgy, after which the students specialize in tinsmithing.
  • The student makes a study agreement with a master in the subject where the internship takes place.
After graduation

After completing studies and vocational training, it is possible to take a journeyman’s examination that entitles you to work in the field as well as admission to studies for a master craftsman’s exam. It is also possible to complete additional studies for a matriculation examination.
