Greenhouse horticulturist

Greenhouse horticulturists work in the cultivation and production of vegetables, potted plants and cut flowers. Greenhouse horticulturists use cultivation techniques to ensure the quality of production and are responsible for the quality of the vegetables and plants they produce.

As a greenhouse horticulturist, you could work as a foreman or manager of a nursery.

Main tasks
  • establishing and following cultivation plans
  • responding appropriately to problems that may arise regarding the cultivation
  • production and sale of greenhouse products
  • controlling environmental factors in greenhouses, such as lighting, temperature and irrigation
  • advice on the cultivation and care of plants in greenhouses and outdoor vegetable growing
Competence requirements

A greenhouse horticulturist needs to know the most common species of cultivation in greenhouses. It is also necessary to be well acquainted with cultivation technical factors such as cultivation space, soil type, fertilization, lighting/darkening, temperature and reactions to pests and diseases. As a horticulturist, it is important to be aware of the environmental impact of production and to know methods to prevent such negative effects.

Study

A horticulture study program is three years and is divided into three courses: garden and forest plants, thermal horticulture and organic horticulture. The study program is at the secondary school level, at the vocational and continuing education department of the Agricultural University of Iceland at Reykir in Ölfus.
