It is also necessary to be well acquainted with cultivation technical factors such as cultivation space, soil type, fertilization, lighting/darkening, temperature and reactions to pests and diseases. As a horticulturist, it is important to be aware of the environmental impact of production and to know methods to prevent such negative effects.
A horticulture study program is three years and is divided into three courses: garden and forest plants, thermal horticulture and organic horticulture. The study program is at the secondary school level, at the vocational and continuing education department of the Agricultural University of Iceland at Reykir in Ölfus.
