Project managers lead work on temporary projects and are responsible for the planning, implementation and evaluation of what is done. An important part of the job is to divide tasks between people in the team, find solutions and make decisions with regard to the goals of the project and the resources available.

Project managers can be found in most sectors of the economy, both the public sector and independent businesses.

Main tasks

• daily supervision and project management
• guiding and encouraging colleagues
• ensuring that documents, minutes and reports are kept
• ensuring that work is carried out according to a budget and time frame

Competence requirements

As a project manager, it is important to be able to take responsibility, seek solutions, assign tasks and make decisions, as well as being interested in organization and finance. Project managers also need to be able to express themselves well in speech and writing and be good at working with others.

Study

A study program for an MS degree in project management is available at the Faculty of Business Administration, University of Iceland, but a study program at Reykjavík University is also offered in collaboration with the Icelandic Project Management Association.

It is most common for a project manager’s educational background to be within the field to which the project in question is related, for example engineering, computer technology or construction.
