Nursing home assistant

A nursing home assistant helps in a variety of activities of daily living to maximize the quality of life of the residents and maintain their independence and well-being. The job is divided into three main parts: support, communication and household chores, often in close contact with residents, relatives and colleagues.

In nursing homes, shift work is carried out under the guidance of a department head or a nurse.

Main tasks

• performing regular inspections and answering calls
• administering medication and assisting with nutrition and fluid intake
• participation in daily life, leisure activities and training
• providing information to relatives
• keeping the environment tidy, e.g., doing laundry, cleaning and making beds

Competence requirements

As a nursing home assistant, it is necessary to pay full attention and show care in all aspects of the work. Work is carried out according to certain rules of procedure and safety, but it is also necessary to be able to adapt to the changing needs of the residents and work in a spirit of care and respect.

A nursing home assistant must maintain confidentiality and sign provisions on confidentiality.

Study

There is no formal requirement for education to work as a nursing home assistant, but various types of work-related courses may be available.
