Dental technician

A dental technician works with a dentist and assists with operations. The job involves receiving clients, preparing them for operations, preparing tools and working with a dentist at the dentist’s chair. Dental technician is a legally protected job title.

Dental technicians work under the direction of dentists, either in a general dental practice or with a specialist.

Main tasks

• advising on dental hygiene
• assisting in taking modules and castings and making dental models
• disinfecting tools and equipment
• reception, telephone answering and booking appointments
• taking medical records, recall lists and registrations
• overseeing inventory and purchasing

Competence requirements

Dental technicians receive an operating license from the Director of Health and must have completed studies in dental technology at the secondary level. Dental technicians need to be able to take X-rays, develop them and complete them, as well as being able to provide education and instructions on good oral and dental hygiene.

Study

Dentistry is about three years of study at the secondary school level, theoretical and practical, at Fjölbrautaskólinn í Ármúla. The practical training takes place at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Iceland.
