Bakers do a variety of jobs related to baking. Most often, recipes are used, changed if necessary and a suitable processing method is chosen at any given time; kneading, stirring, whipping or shaping. Bakers receive ingredients, sort and evaluate them, determine temperature and baking time and service customers. Baking is a certified profession.

A baker needs to know the most common ingredients, how to handle them and their health and nutritional value. It is important to be able to calculate the price of goods and services and show responsibility regarding hygiene in the workplace and customer service.

Study

Menntaskólinn í Kópavogi (Kópavogur College) offers a study program in baking. The average duration of study is four years. In addition, a two-year undergraduate course in food sciences is taught at Verkmenntaskólinn á Akureyri (Akureyri Comprehensive College). Validation of prior learning has taken place and/or may be available.
