Forest technology studies/horticulture studies in the field of forest and nature are work-related and at the secondary school level. The program involves developing skills and knowledge regarding forestry, reforestation and general land improvement. Natural resources science, ecology and environmental science, soil and fertilizer science, plant knowledge, outdoor recreation areas and nature reserves are among the subjects studied.

The study period is three years, including 60 weeks of vocational training.

Study

Forest technology/horticulture studies in the field of forest and nature have been taught at the Agricultural University of Iceland at Reykir in Ölfus.

Requirements

It is preferable that the applicant has completed a 12-week trial period in general forestry or horticulture in addition to a part of an apprenticeship before the theoretical studies begin. Applicants must also have completed two to four semesters of secondary school, including certain credits in a certain number of subjects. Job experience may be assessed as part of the studies, which is examined on a case-by-case basis.

Curriculum

Studies in the field of forest and nature are divided into study path specializations and vocational training. Vocational training takes place at a vocational education location chosen by the student and approved by the school.

After graduation

After graduation, students can work in a variety of jobs related to forestry and arboriculture as well as reforestation, nature conservation, and in outdoor and tourism areas.
