Police science is a work-related study program at the university level. The study program covers the subjects of law enforcement in a broad context with the aim of providing students with basic skills in preventing and investigating violations of the law and ensuring general safety.

A study program in police science is available at the University of Akureyri.

Requirements

Applicants must (see further information):

  • be Icelandic citizens, 20 years of age or older
  • not have committed a criminal offence
  • be of sound mind and body
  • have completed a matriculation examination or equivalent education

The study program is credit-worthy at the Student Education Fund. Trade unions also often provide scholarships for study. Get more information from your union.

Curriculum

The study program for prospective police officers is a 120-credit, two-year diploma program. It is also possible to complete a 180-credit BA program in addition to a program for working police officers.

Emphasis is on flexible learning, on-site learning and distance learning. The Education and Career Development Center oversees the vocational training in collaboration with the University of Akureyri.

After graduation

Studies in police science prepare students for work in law enforcement, but also offer the option of various types of specialization, such as work in special units, management of police offices or international aid and development work.
