Photography is a study program at secondary school level. The main goal of the program is for students to acquire knowledge and skills in photography and image processing, whether on film or in digital format. Photography is a certified trade.
The average study period is three years, including vocational training, during which the progress of the workplace studies is recorded in an electronic logbook.
A study program in photography has been available at the Technical College (Tækniskólinn – skóli atvinnulífsins).
A study path in artistic photography has also been available at Fjarmenntaskólinn, and the Photography School, which is a specialized secondary school, has emphasized the technical aspects of photography.
Students must have completed compulsory education in accordance with the National Curriculum Guide for Compulsory Schools.
The program has been credit-worthy for subsistence and other loans at the Student Education Fund (Menntasjóður námsmanna). Trade unions also often provide scholarships for study. Get more information from your union.
The studies are divided into general theoretical subjects, specialties of photography and vocational training. Students first enrol in a joint three- to four-semester basic program in information and media subjects, followed by photography specialization for two semesters.
After completing studies and vocational training, it is possible to take a journeyman’s examination that entitles you to work in the field as well as giving admission to studies for a master craftsman’s exam. It is also possible to complete additional studies for a matriculation examination.
