Mountaineering studies

Skill level: 2

Studying mountaineering at the secondary level is intended to increase students’ ability to travel in the mountains and wilderness in Iceland, taking the first step that can be built on with further studies and training.

Emphasis in the study is related to training and an understanding of what is most important for outdoor life in the wilderness to be both safe and enjoyable. Also good treatment and respect for nature in the planning and implementation of mountain trips. The teaching mostly takes place in nature where students deal with real situations. In addition to theoretical studies, the subjects are specialties; practical outdoor learning, self-guided tours, first aid, group management and field presentations.

This is a two-year program that ends with a secondary school leaving certificate.

Study

A mountaineering study path has been offered at Framhaldsskólinn í Austur-Skaftafellssýslu and at Fjarmenntaskólinn.

Requirements

Applicants must have completed compulsory education in accordance with the National Curriculum Guide for Compulsory Schools. Trade union education funds often provide scholarships for study. Get more information from your union.

Curriculum

Mountaineering studies are divided into general core subjects and special subjects that can also be part of studies leading to a matriculation examination. In their studies, students plan short trips that become longer, and include more elements, as time goes on. In the final tour, all the main aspects of the specialization of the study are trained and the students’ performance in the field is evaluated.

The internship part of the mountain study consists of introductory and field visits where students get to know the scope and diversity of work in connection with tourism and mountaineering and gain insight into how trips can be organized with the help of local parties.

After graduation

The program does not provide formal qualifications, but should make students better able to plan trips in the mountains and wilderness and provide certain basic training in such trips.
