Studying mountaineering at the secondary level is intended to increase students’ ability to travel in the mountains and wilderness in Iceland, taking the first step that can be built on with further studies and training.
Emphasis in the study is related to training and an understanding of what is most important for outdoor life in the wilderness to be both safe and enjoyable. Also good treatment and respect for nature in the planning and implementation of mountain trips. The teaching mostly takes place in nature where students deal with real situations. In addition to theoretical studies, the subjects are specialties; practical outdoor learning, self-guided tours, first aid, group management and field presentations.
This is a two-year program that ends with a secondary school leaving certificate.
